Two years ago the majority of all calls to our Employment Helpline related primarily to maternity issues and long term sickness. Grievances and disciplinary issues also featured but not as highly.
 
In 2009 the pattern changed dramatically with the vast majority relating to disciplinary, dismissal and compromise agreements closely followed by redundancy issues. Sickness queries were still high.
 
The pattern reflects the direct impact of the economic recession, where businesses were seeking appropriate ways to trim their workforce.
 
This year so far there have been a significant number of calls relating to TUPE issues. This reflects the gradual easing out of recession and restructuring involving merger and acquisition activity.
 
Looking to the future, the major public sector cuts forecast will ‘bite’ in 2011. At that point we anticipate more queries from suppliers to the public sector who may have contracts severed or scaled back with the knock on employment effect.1
