Markel in the news

Tracey is 19 years old and cares for her Dad
Tracey cares for her 55 year old father Ray who has Parkinson’s disease. Ray is completely housebound and requires constant supervision. Tracey is a young adult carer at 19 years of age and carries out all domestic chores, cooking, cleaning etc, as well as providing practical and emotional support to her father. Tracey’s washing machine has broken down and is beyond repair. In addition to Tracey’s caring role and all the jobs that need to be done around the house, she now has to make frequent trips to the laundrette. This has put an extra burden to her already demanding caring role and is becoming very time consuming and expensive. To alleviate some of her current stress and additional workload, the Carers Relief fund awarded Tracey £400 to purchase a new washer dryer.

Louise cares for her 11 year old son who has autism and learning disabilities
Louise cares for her 11 year old son James who has profound autism and learning disabilities. James only sleeps a few hours at night and as Louise is his primary carer, she has to mirror this sleep pattern resulting in her being exhausted throughout the day. Louise cares for her son by washing, dressing, toileting and maintaining nappy wear and changes. Due to James’ condition, he has no sense of danger which means that Louise is constantly supervising his every move. She has requested a new fridge and accompanying door alarm. The old fridge has become badly damaged as a result of James constantly opening and slamming the door. This has led to food becoming spoiled and ultimately the door has been damaged beyond repair. The purchase of a new fridge and alarm will reduce the stress that Louise experiences regarding James’ behaviour with the fridge door. It will mean she has a fully working fridge that is protected from future damage of this kind, giving her piece of mind and one less thing to worry about.

The other 25% of the funds Markel raise go to seven local carers centres partnered with our regional offices.
