- William Stovin to become President and Chief Operating Officer of Markel International
- Jeremy Brazil to become President of Markel International Insurance Company Limited
Gerry Albanese, who has been President and Chief Operating Officer of Markel International since 2003, is returning to the United States to assume a senior executive position with Markel Corporation. From September 1 William Stovin will replace him as President and Chief Operating Officer of Markel International. At the same time, Jeremy Brazil will become President of Markel International Insurance Company Limited, in addition to his role as Active Underwriter of Markel Syndicate 3000.
Markel International is the London based subsidiary for the international operations of Markel Corporation, the international property and casualty group headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Markel International operates through Markel International Insurance Company in the London company market and through Markel Syndicate 3000 at Lloyd’s.
Gerry Albanese said: “We have always aimed to have Markel’s London based, international operations directed and managed by a team with a strong background in the London market. In making these two important appointments we reviewed both internal and external candidates and I am delighted that William and Jeremy have been promoted from their current positions and will be leading the company in the future."
As part of Markel International’s management team William Stovin was heavily involved in the reorganisation of the company immediately after its acquisition by Markel in 2000. In 2005, he was appointed director of Administration and was responsible for Legal and Regulatory, IT, Claims and Special Projects. In February 2008 he was promoted to Chief Administrative Officer.
Jeremy Brazil has been underwriting in the London market since 1989. At Markel International he became director of reinsurance in 2001 and for the past two years he has been responsible for the strategic management of Markel’s underwriting divisions as well as being responsible for Markel International’s reinsurance buying strategy.
Gerry Albanese added: “William has played a fundamental role at Markel International since the very early days of the Markel purchase and I am sure he will lead the company to deliver its business objectives in the coming years. Jeremy’s broad underwriting expertise makes him an invaluable part of the management team and the strength of our underwriting results reflects his contribution.”
Paul Springman, President and Chief Operating Officer of Markel Corporation, added: “William and Jeremy are a strong team to take the business forward and we are very pleased for these two appointments to come from the existing management team at Markel International. Our international operations have come a long way since we entered the London market in 2000 and both William and Jeremy have played important roles in the successful development of Markel International since then.”
