Ronan’s customer story

At Markel Direct, we insure a wide variety of customers, including a range of self-employed professions, small businesses, charities and community groups.

To help demystify the insurance claim process, we have met with customers to share their stories and experiences of claiming, and how Markel Direct have helped them. Ronan O’Brien, Chairman of Austerlands Institute, shares his insurance claim story with us:

The small snooker club in Oldham, who provide snooker facilities for the local community, experienced a damaging break-in. The premises of where Austerlands Institute run their snooker club had their windows broken and equipment ruined, alongside the theft of electrical items.

“We came in one Sunday morning and saw that the club had been broken into. We’re a non-profit making organisation, having the insurance policy meant we didn’t have to worry about the cost of replacing the cloth. We would have had to take that out of club funds, which would mean us cutting corners on some other service we can provide for the community.”

Speaking about the claims process, Ronan shared how the club had previously worked with another insurer who took over 7 months to settle a claim, so he was delighted with Markel’s service.

“We contacted our insurers Markel direct, and in three days everything had been settled. It was just amazing. The speed in which they handled everything meant we could all get back to the important matter of playing snooker.”

“I would recommend any club to have insurance because we all think it’s not going to happen to us until the day it happens.”
