Why do computer programmers need insurance?
Companies worldwide rely on software to operate their business across key functions such as finance, billing, databases and e-commerce. If a program you are responsible for programming or maintaining fails due to an oversight on your part, and your client’s incurs a loss as a result, they may take legal action against you to recover their costs.
What it covers
Computer programmer insurance from Markel includes a range of different optional covers that have all been designed to protect against the risks most commonly experienced by computer programmers, which include:
Cyber-attack causing data breach
Programming you undertook for a module of a client’s IT system is deemed unfit for purpose. Your client pursues you for the cost of engaging another IT contractor to put right your mistakes. Covered by professional indemnity insurance.
Software failure
An error made when patching your client’s payroll program causes the system to go down, resulting in a number of staff not being paid on time. You are held responsible for the error and your client takes legal action against you seeking compensation. Covered by professional indemnity insurance.
Client injury
A client trips over your laptop wire and injures themselves. They are unable to work for a number of weeks and make a personal injury claim against you.

Is my past work covered?
If you have held uninterrupted professional indemnity insurance prior to taking out a policy with us then yes, past work is covered.
However, we are unable to cover past work if you did not hold professional indemnity insurance continuously prior to arranging a policy with us.
Examples include:
- Never holding professional indemnity insurance before
- Previously holding professional indemnity insurance, but not renewing it
- Cancelling a professional indemnity policy during your contract
Call us on 0800 640 6600 if you need any further clarification on whether your past work is covered with our insurance.
-
What's the difference between professional indemnity and public liability?
Professional indemnity insurance protects you and your business against cases of professional negligence where you are liable. An example could be if you or an employee make an error while coding a piece of software, leading to a bug in the program that proves costly to a business.
Public liability insurance covers against cases of third-party personal injury or illness claims, occurring during the course of your business. These claims are covered, alongside damage to third-party property – such as client-owned smartphones or laptops.
You should consider arranging both covers as they protect against different scenarios.
-
What limit of cover should I choose?
Before beginning contracted client work, you may wish to check with your industry association or client whether you are required to have a minimum limit of cover.
If you have never arranged insurance cover before, a useful guide is to consider what the likely costs would be in a worst case scenario, and arranging a limit of cover that would cater to this.
We offer a variety of limits and levels of cover, giving you the option to create a insurance package based on your individual requirements.
