Without the right cover, you could be left facing sizable compensation claims and legal bills if a customer is injured or has their property damaged by your products. The right insurance can also protect you against a range of other risks.
At Markel, we provide candle business insurance that you can rely on - and at an affordable price.
Candle maker insurance is there to protect you against unexpected financial losses that you might suffer when making and selling your products. There are many different types of cover available to candle makers, from public and product liability insurance to cyber protection.
Whether making and selling candles or wax melts is your full-time occupation or you just do it as a side venture in your spare time, you’ll need insurance. Without it, you will not be covered if something goes wrong. For example, if a customer makes a claim against you because they are injured, become ill or suffer damage to their property as a result of the products you have sold them, you could face significant legal bills and compensation costs. Unless you could cover these potentially major expenses yourself, you’ll require insurance to protect your finances.
It's also important to be aware that you may be required to show proof of public liability insurance before you’re allowed to sell your candles at craft fairs, market stalls and so on.
As well as liability cover, you might need insurance to protect your premises and candle-making equipment. Accidents can happen at any time, from fires and floods to theft. Having appropriate cover in place will give you peace of mind - and should problems like these arise, you won’t be left counting the cost.

At Markel, we have decades of experience in providing tailored cover to a wide range of small businesses and sole traders. Here are just some of the reasons to choose us for your candle business insurance.

Public liability insurance protects you against claims made by members of the public who are injured or have their property damaged as a result of the activities of your business. Our public liability cover also comes with product liability as standard. Product liability insurance for candle makers protects you against compensation claims made by third parties who are injured or suffer property damage because of a product you have made and/or sold. Choose from limits ranging from £1 million to £5 million.
Example of a claim:
A wax melt you sell causes a customer to develop a rash. They make a personal injury claim against you to get compensation for their injury.
If you employ people, you are legally required to take out employers’ liability cover of at least £5 million. This protects you from compensation claims made by employees if they become ill or are injured as a result of the work they do for you. Our employer’s liability insurance provides cover of up to £10 million.
Example of a claim:
A worker suffers an injury as a result of coming into contact with hot wax. They take legal action to compensate them for their injury and lost earnings.
Legal expenses insurance covers your costs if you’re involved in legal disputes such as personal injury claims, tax enquiries, contract disputes, debt recovery cases and so on. We offer cover with a limit of £100,000.
Particularly if you sell your candles or wax melts online, you may benefit from taking out cyber and data risks insurance to protect you in the event of a breach of your IT systems. This type of cover pays the cost of restoring equipment and data, meeting ransom demands, informing clients and making up lost profits. It also covers legal fees and damages that you may have to pay to third parties.
Example of a claim:
You are the victim of a cyber-attack that compromises the data of your customers, including payment details. As well as facing the costs of informing your customers of the attack, you are subject to legal action taken by the affected parties.
Occupational personal accident insurance is there to protect you if you’re unable to work because of an injury you suffer at work, or while travelling to or from work. It provides weekly payments or a lump sum, depending on the type of injury, and is designed to support your income.
Office and business equipment insurance covers your buildings, contents and computer equipment against accidental damage and theft while on your premises. You also have the option of extending cover for your vital equipment outside your premises.
Example of a claim:
The laptops and other equipment that you rely on to run your business and sell your candles are damaged in a fire at your premises, meaning you face significant costs for replacement and you suffer lost earnings until you can start operating again.
Directors and officers insurance protects you against the costs associated with defending yourself as a director or officer of your business against allegations of wrongful acts, as well as damages that may be awarded against you. Limits range from £100,000 to £5 million.
The cost of your policy will depend on a range of factors, including the size of your business and the types and level of cover you require. At Markel, we offer candle making insurance from £5 a month*.
