Whether you’re mowing lawns, pruning trees or treating turf, there’s no doubt you take an enormous amount of care when it comes to attending to your clients’ outdoor spaces as a professional gardener.
With this in mind, it’s important to ensure that your gardening business is suitably protected - and taking out an insurance policy is the first step.
At Markel, we have over 25 years’ worth of experience providing businesses of all sizes with insurance. This means you can trust us to find you a policy that suits your individual needs.
What is gardeners’ insurance?
Gardeners’ insurance is designed to provide financial protection for you and your business when something goes wrong. From cover for your gardening equipment, to property damage insurance, to public liability insurance for gardeners, there are a wide range of policies to choose from to ensure that you’re suitably covered in times of trouble.
At Markel, we can tailor your gardening insurance to meet your business' individual requirements. This gives you added peace of mind that you’re fully protected, no matter what happens.
Do I need gardeners’ insurance?
The truth is, accidents happen, even if you take steps to minimise risk. That’s why it’s important to ensure your business is protected should the worst happen. Without a suitable insurance policy in place, you will not be covered financially, which could spell bad news for your bottom line.
For example, if you are trimming back a tree and a branch falls and damages the customer’s property, you may have a claim made against you and your business. In this instance, you could be expected to pay any legal fees or compensation costs. With the right insurance, you don’t need to worry about footing these bills out of your own pocket.
Similarly, gardeners’ insurance can also protect you against claims made by your own employees. If you have people working for you, it’s likely they use potentially dangerous equipment and they may even work from a height at times. This means there is a risk of them being injured on the job. If an employee does sustain an injury, or become unwell as a result of their work, insurance is there so that you don’t have to pick up the cost.
Our gardeners’ insurance can also provide cover for your tools and materials. This will mean you have peace of mind that your equipment is protected, no matter what happens.

What insurance do gardeners need?
-
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance will protect your business against any claims made by members of the public who experience property damage or have sustained an injury as a result of your business. We offer public liability insurance for gardeners ranging from £1 million to £5 million.
Example of a claim:
You accidentally damage a customer’s car with a hedge trimmer. The customer makes a claim for compensation to cover the cost of repairing their car.
-
Employers’ liability insurance
If you have employees working for your gardening business, you are required by law to have employers’ liability insurance in place with a minimum value of £5 million. Employers’ liability insurance protects your business from claims made by your employees if they become unwell or injure themselves while carrying out their job.
Example of a claim:
An employee is using a ladder to cut back a tree when they slip and fall from a height, seriously injuring themselves in the process. The employee pursues legal action, making a personal injury compensation claim for their injuries and loss of earning as a result of not being able to work.
-
Tools insurance
Tools insurance provides cover for the cost of replacing your gardening equipment, materials and supplies if they become damaged or go missing in an event such as a fire, flood or theft. You can choose from cover limits ranging from £1,000 to £5,000 per person.
Example of a claim:
The building in which you store your gardening equipment is broken into and some of your tools are stolen. This leaves you facing the expense of having to replace these tools.
-
Occupational personal accident insurance
Occupational personal accident insurance provides financial protection if you are unable to continue to work due to an injury you have sustained while at work, or while travelling to or from work. This cover provides you with weekly payments or one lump sum, depending on the injury you have sustained.
-
Owned plant insurance
Owned plant insurance will cover the costs of repairing or replacing plant machinery you own if it's damaged or stolen. Cover limits are available from £10,000 to £50,000.
-
Hired in plant
If you hire in plant machinery from a leasing company, like concrete mixers or forklifts, hired in plant insurance will cover you if the machinery is damaged or stolen. Cover limits range from £10,000 to £50,000.
-
Contract works insurance
Contract works insurance can cover the work you complete on a construction site. For example, if your work is affected by a flood, fire, theft or malicious damage, contract works insurance can protect you financially.
-
Goods in transit insurance
Goods in transit insurance covers goods against loss or damage while travelling. This covers both goods transported in your own vehicle, or on your behalf by a third-party carrier.
-
Professional indemnity insurance
If you provide professional services (such as garden designs or gardening advice) for a fee as part of your business, then you may want to consider taking out professional indemnity insurance. This ensures any legal fees or compensation costs are covered if a client makes a claim against you for an error in the service you supplied.

Frequently asked questions
-
When should I get gardeners’ insurance?
At Markel, we recommend taking out a gardeners’ insurance policy as soon as possible. Ideally, you should have suitable cover in place before you start your first project for a client. This will ensure that your business is protected from the get go, regardless of what happens.
-
Do I need public liability even if I work alone?
If you work by yourself, you might struggle to think what can go wrong, especially if you’re in sole control of a gardening project from start to finish. The truth is, accidents can happen when you least expect it, meaning that public liability insurance is a must for any gardening business.
Whether a passerby trips over a piece of equipment you’ve left on the pavement outside your client’s house, or you accidentally damage a customer’s car while walking past with a set of ladders, this type of insurance will ensure you’re financially covered should you find that a claim is made against you and your business. At Markel, we offer self-employed gardener insurance for those who work alone, meaning you’re suitably covered if something happens.
