Working as a gas engineer comes with inherent risks. You are dealing with complex and dangerous systems, and each new job presents its own challenges.

At Markel Direct, we believe that we offer excellent value gas engineers’ insurance tailored to meet your precise needs. You can rely on us if things don’t go to plan.
What is gas engineers’ insurance?
Gas engineers’ insurance is designed to protect your business from a variety of risks. Available to specialists who work on gas boilers and central heating systems, it can include various types of cover, such as public liability insurance, employers’ liability insurance, tools insurance, professional indemnity cover and more.
Public liability insurance for gas engineers
Of all the various types of financial cover available to gas fitters, public liability insurance is often considered to be the most valuable. It protects you against claims made by customers and members of the public who are injured or suffer property damage because of your business.
As a gas engineer, you will inevitably come into contact with the public. This may be in clients’ homes or in commercial premises, or both. Because of this, there is always a risk of an accident involving a member of the public or their property. For example, you might need to move a washing machine in order to install a boiler, and in doing so, you could cause a water leak that damages a customer’s flooring. Or a member of the public might trip over a toolbox you have left out and suffer an injury. In cases like these, you could be left facing significant legal bills and compensation costs. Public liability insurance is there to safeguard your finances.
Do I need gas engineers’ insurance?
No matter how careful you are, there is always the possibility that something will go wrong. And as a gas fitter, the consequences of a mistake could be serious. If you cause a flood or a fire in a customer’s home, would your business be able to cover the costs? Or if a member of the public suffers an injury and sues you, could your finances stretch to pay for the legal and compensation costs you might face? Unless you could cope with these expenses, you will need public liability insurance. It's also important to be aware that some prospective customers may require proof that you have public liability insurance secured before they agree to use your services.
Then there are your tools to think about. You rely on your equipment to make a living, and if it was lost, stolen or damaged and you didn’t have appropriate financial cover, you could be left facing a large bill to replace or repair it. And if you have employees, even if they are part-time or temporary, you are legally required to have employers’ liability insurance in place.
