Do I need gas engineers insurance?

No matter how careful you are, there is always the possibility that something will go wrong. And as a gas fitter, the consequences of a mistake could be serious. If you cause a flood or a fire in a customer’s home, would your business be able to cover the costs? Or if a member of the public suffers an injury and sues you, could your finances stretch to pay for the legal and compensation costs you might face? Unless you could cope with these expenses, gas engineers’ insurance is absolutely essential. Then there are your tools to think about. You rely on your equipment to make a living, and if it was lost, stolen or damaged and you didn’t have appropriate financial cover, you could be left facing a large bill to replace or repair it.

And if you have employees, even if they are part-time or temporary, you are legally required to have employers’ liability insurance in place.

Gas engineer public liability insurance

Of all the various types of financial cover available to gas fitters, public liability insurance for gas engineers is often considered to be the most valuable. It protects you against claims made by customers and members of the public who are injured or suffer property damage because of your business.

As a gas engineer, you will inevitably come into contact with the public. This may be in clients’ homes or in commercial premises, or both. Because of this, there is always a risk of an accident involving a member of the public or their property.

For example, you might need to move a washing machine in order to install a boiler, and in doing so, you could cause a water leak that damages a customer’s flooring. Or a member of the public might trip over a toolbox you have left out and suffer an injury. In cases like these, you could be left facing significant legal bills and compensation costs. Public liability insurance is there to safeguard your finances.

It's also important to be aware that some prospective customers may require proof that you have public liability insurance secured before they agree to use your services. We provide gas engineers’ public liability cover of between £1 million and £5 million.

What types of insurance do gas engineers need?

As well as gas engineer public liability insurance, there is a wide range of covers designed to protect gas fitters and engineers. Gas safe engineer insurance policies are designed with you in mind, and the covers can be tailored to suit your specific business needs.

Gas engineer insurance cost

The cost of your gas engineers’ insurance will depend on various factors. For example, the size of your business, the types of financial protection you want and the level of cover you require will all have an impact.

  • Employers' liability insurance

Employers’ liability insurance protects your business if a worker takes legal action over an illness or injury they have suffered due to their work. You are legally required to have at least £5 million of this type of cover in place. Our employers’ liability insurance for gas fitters is available with a cover limit of up to £10 million.

    Example of a claim:

One of your engineers is electrocuted while doing work involving an electrical system. They take legal action, claiming you failed to provide them with appropriate diagnostic tools.

  • Tools insurance

Tools insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing your equipment if it is stolen, lost or damaged. We provide cover limits ranging from £1,000 to £5,000 and you can choose to cover your tools during working hours only (8am – 6pm) or on a 24 hour basis for complete peace of mind.

    Example of a claim:

While your van is parked outside of a customer’s home, a criminal forces the locks and breaks into your van, stealing your tool box, containing a range of important tools, including a hand vacuum, circular saw, drills, adjustable spanners and screwdrivers.

  • Legal expenses insurance

Legal expenses insurance can help to cover the cost of defending or pursuing legal actions against other parties such as suppliers, clients or employees. This could be for contract disputes, tax enquiries (including IR35), attending jury service, debt recovery, personal injury, as well as any award you are required to pay following an employment dispute with an employee. There is a limit of £100,000.

    Example of a claim:

A supplier has failed to deliver building materials you’ve paid for and is ignoring your requests for a refund. You face the costs associated with recovering the debt owed to you.

  • Occupational personal accident insurance

Occupational personal accident insurance is there to support your income if you are unable to do your job because you’re injured as a result of your work. It can provide a lump sum or weekly payments, depending on the type of injury you suffer.

    Example of a claim:

A road traffic accident during your commute results in a serious injury that means you’re unable to work for a prolonged period of time. Your cover provides weekly benefits or a cash lump sum (depending on the type of injury) to help support your income.

  • Owned plant insurance

Owned plant insurance covers your own plant machinery for theft and damage. It covers the cost of replacing or repairing the machinery. We offer cover limits ranging from £10,000 to £50,000.

    Example  of a claim:

Your own plant equipment is damaged during bad weather. Your owned plant insurance policy covers you for repair and replacement costs.

  • Hired in plant insurance

Hired in plant insurance covers the cost of replacing or repairing plant machinery that you have hired from a third party if it is stolen or damaged. Our cover limits range from £10,000 to £50,000.

    Example of a claim:

Equipment that you have hired is vandalised and damaged beyond repair in the process. Your hired in plant insurance policy covers you for any compensation costs you are liable for under the terms of your hire agreement.

  • Contract works insurance

Contract works insurance protects the work that you and your employees are carrying out on a construction site. It is there to cover you in the event of a fire, flood or theft, or an act of malicious damage. It covers the costs of redoing or repairing the work.

  • Goods in transit insurance

Goods in transit insurance offers protection for goods that are moving from one location to another if they are lost or damaged. This can apply to goods being transported in your own vehicle or by a third-party carrier.

    Example of a claim:

A set of radiators are damaged in your van as you drive along a bumpy road towards a job. Your goods in transit insurance covers you for replacements.

  • Professional indemnity insurance

Professional indemnity insurance protects you if a customer makes a claim against you because of a mistake you have made while providing a professional service for a fee. This could include offering advice on a heating system.

    Example of a claim:

A customer from a recent job claims against you regarding a new central heating system that you have installed. With professional indemnity insurance, you’re covered for court costs and any resulting compensation payments.
