Whether you’re fitting simple locks or state-of-the-art security systems, there are risks associated with your work. From accidents and injuries to the theft of expensive equipment, a lot can go wrong. This means it’s vital that you have appropriate insurance in place to protect your business.
At Markel, we offer great value locksmith insurance that will help you to safeguard your finances and give you added peace of mind.
Locksmith insurance is there to protect your business from a wide range of financial risks. It can include multiple types of cover, such as equipment insurance that will pay out if your tools are stolen, lost or damaged. Other important types of protection to be aware of include public liability cover and employers’ liability insurance.
No matter how careful you are, things can go wrong when you’re working as a locksmith. And if they do, it’s important that you’re prepared. For example, what if you accidentally cause damage to a customer’s door jamb? Or perhaps a passer-by trips over your tool bag and injures themselves.
In situations like these, you might find yourself subject to costly legal claims. Could you afford to cover the legal fees and possible compensation costs out of your own pocket? Or what if the tools you rely on to do your job are stolen, lost or damaged? Would you be able to replace them if you didn’t have equipment insurance in place?
If your finances would come under significant pressure in scenarios like these, it’s essential that you have suitable locksmith insurance in place.
Also, if you hire employees to work for your business, you are legally required to take out employers’ liability insurance. Bear in mind that this applies even if your workers are temporary or part-time. You could face a fine of £2,500 for every day that you lack this type of locksmith liability insurance.
By making sure that you have the right cover in place, you can reduce the risks to your business and benefit from enhanced peace of mind.

Public liability insurance for locksmiths protects you if a member of the public is injured or suffers property damage because of your business. Choose from cover limits ranging from £1 million to £5 million.
Example of a claim:
You spill lubricating spray onto the floor in a flat stairwell. A passer-by slips on the spillage, suffering a sprained ankle. They sue you for their injuries.
If you have employees, the law requires you to have a minimum of £5 million of employers’ liability insurance. This applies even if your business only employs people on a short-term or part-time basis. Locksmith employers’ liability insurance covers you if an employee suffers an illness or is injured because of the work they do for you. At Markel, we offer up to £10 million in cover.
Example of a claim:
One of your workers injures their hand on a sharp piece of metal. They seek compensation from you for their suffering and loss of earnings.
This type of insurance is there to protect your finances if the equipment you rely on to do your job as a locksmith is damaged, stolen or lost. We offer cover limits ranging from £1,000 to £5,000.
Example of a claim:
Your work van is broken into and various important tools are stolen from it. You face the expense of replacing these items.
Legal expenses insurance can help to cover the cost of defending or pursuing legal actions against other parties such as suppliers, clients or employees. This could be for contract disputes, tax enquiries (including IR35), attending jury service, debt recovery, personal injury, as well as any award you are required to pay following an employment dispute with an employee. There is a limit of £100,000.
Example of a claim:
A supplier has failed to deliver building materials you’ve paid for and is ignoring your requests for a refund. You face the costs associated with recovering the debt owed to you.
Occupational personal accident insurance supports your income if you can’t do your job because you were injured at work or while on your way to or from work. It provides either weekly payments or a lump sum, depending on the nature of your injury.
If you own plant machinery that is damaged or stolen, owned plant insurance will cover the costs of repairing or replacing the equipment. Cover limits are available from £10,000 to £50,000.
Hired in plant insurance will cover you if plant machinery you have hired is damaged or stolen, while in your possession. Cover limits range from £10,000 to £50,000.
Contract works insurance covers the work you do on a construction site. If your work is affected by a flood, fire, theft or malicious damage, contract works insurance can protect you financially.
Goods in transit insurance covers goods against loss or damage while in transit. This can be either goods transported in your own vehicle, or on your behalf by a third-party carrier.
If your locksmith business provides professional services for a fee, you may benefit from having professional indemnity insurance. For example, you might need this type of cover if you provide designs or advice. This insurance protects you if a client alleges you have made a mistake in the services you have provided.
Our locksmith insurance starts from £7 a month. The amount you will pay for your insurance depends on a number of factors, including the size of your business, the equipment you use and whether you employ people.
