Do I need tools insurance?

Even if you take great care of your tools, there is always a risk that something will go wrong. What if you need tool insurance for equipment left in a van overnight, or while you are parked outside a client’s home? Or perhaps there is a flood or fire in the garage or storage unit where you leave your equipment, resulting in thousands of pounds worth of damage to your tools. Your equipment might also be damaged, or you might suffer tool theft while you’re working on a building site. Having to replace or repair these items out of your own pocket could devastate your finances. And if you don’t have access to your equipment, you might end up letting customers down. As well as being bad news for your bottom line, this can damage your reputation.

By making sure you have suitable tradesman tool insurance in place, you can be sure that even if the worst happens, you won’t be left counting the cost.

What does tools insurance cover?

With tools insurance from Markel Direct, you can choose to have your tools covered between the working hours of 8am to 6pm or 24 hours a day. If you would like to have your tools covered overnight, be sure to select the 24-hour-a-day option. If your tools are covered during working hours only, this means you will not be covered for any incident occurring outside the hours of 8am to 6pm.

Our tools insurance can cover the following:

What is covered

  • Tool theft
Tools insurance safeguards your business if your tools are stolen from your home, van, or place of work.
  • Accidental loss, damage, or destruction
This type of policy could cover the cost of repairs or replacements if you accidentally lose or damage your tools at your premises or on-site within the UK.
  • Transit
This cover can help to protect you if your tools get damaged whilst in transit to a different job site.

What is not covered

  • General wear and tear
Tools insurance does not cover general wear and tear of your tools, including corrosion, rust, damp, scratches, dents, or gradual deterioration.
  • Theft from unattended vehicles, or unsecured and open locations
This type of policy does not cover your stolen tools if they are left in an unattended vehicle. However, if there is proof of forced entry, this exclusion will not apply.
  • Overnight restrictions
Unless you have chosen to protect your tools overnight within your policy, your tools will not be covered if they have been either damaged or stolen between 6pm-8am.
  • Property damage
Tools insurance does not cover you for claims made against your business for damage you cause to third party property. However, our public liability insurance could help protect your business from these types of claims.
  • Injury to employees
If an employee makes a claim against you due to a work-related injury or illness, tools insurance does not cover this. However, our employers’ liability insurance could help safeguard you from these types of claims.
